Written by Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island is an adventure novel aimed at young readers, although it would prove popular among people of all ages. It was originally published inserial form in the magazine Young Folks from 1881 to 1882, and it would later be collected in book form in 1883.

Intended as a coming-of-age tale, the story centers on Jim Hawkins, an impressionable teenager living on the English coast during the 1700s. When a lodger at his parent’s inn passes away, Jim andhis mother discover a treasure map among the dead man’s possessions. A search for the hidden loot is proposed, with various locals signing up for the voyage.
As it turns out, a number of pirates want the treasure for themselves, and they’re led by a one-legged cutthroat known as Long John Silver. They gain jobs aboard Jim’s vessel, with Silver posingas the ship’s cook. Their plan is to find the treasure, steal it, and kill anyone who stands in their way. When Jim and his adult companions discover this treachery, the rest of the storyconcerns their efforts to stay alive.
